The "Times" on China, 1898-1900.

Newspaper articles and letters to the editor on events in China, culled from the London Times and recopied by a typing service at the behest of Charles Wason. Major topics covered include the Boxer Rebellion; diplomatic negotiations between China and the European powers, including Germany, Britain, France, Russia, and Italy; negotiations over the building of railroads in China; and tensions surrounding neighboring countries, such as Japan and Russia (presaging the Russo-Japanese War of 1905) and Korea. The positions of British and other warships off the Asian coast are also frequently described. The articles come from either the Reuters news service or the Times's own correspondents.

Richard Howe, Earl Howe, was born in London, England, on March 19, 1726, the son of Emanuel Scrope Howe (1699-1735) and Mary Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg (1703-1782). Wason, Charles William, 1854-1918

Electrical engineer. Charles W. Wason studied mechanical engineering at Cornell University from 1872-1876 and was involved in the Cornell Boat Club and Navy. After leaving Cornell in 1876 he became an electrical engineer and later became prominent in the railroad industry.
